George Washington Banks
This is George Washington Banks. My grandfather. He was born Feb 7 1874 in Abbeville County, SC.
He lives till July 6 1951. He is 77 and Carolyn and Hiawatha meet him and fall in love.
He is pictured here with his first wife, America Funderburg Banks 1880-1912
And four children. Apparently, James Coleman 1899, Mathew 1902, Gladys 1904 and Carrie Mae 1906.
This must be from about 1910. He's about 36 or so.

Hello Bernice Kenneth and Keith
Hope these few lines find you all ok.
As for us not too much
I am not feeling good at all
I have worked too hard in the lettuce
We had to work Monday night till 1 o'clock.
I think maybe we are through now though.
The lettuce has gone to the bad.
Thank goodness though I made enough to pay and straightened up my little back
debts and maybe have lunch money for the boys with what little they can make
mowing yards to last till the term of school is out.
They don’t get much mowing to do here and what little they get, people don’t pay what its worth.
And they hadn’t been able to get no work at the celery shed yet.
Me and them both went to see Mr Martin about work for them but so far they hadn’t got any.
Bernice, Faye came last Sunday and bought a big box of clothes for you and some little
clothes.
She said when I seen passing to send them to you that she didn’t know
when they could go over there and she figured I would have a better chance to get
them to you.
Well I got me a nice patch of okra row planted. Sure hope they make.
Bernice, I would of wrote you sooner but honest I don’t have time to do anything I
can let go.
You all come see us when you can.
I guess I better close as I have got to try to wash today.
Love always Mama
